Early Childhood Development

North Hawaii and Ka'u Child Development Program is a family support program for families of infants and toddlers with developmental delays who live in the North Hawaii area including the communities of Waikoloa, Waimea, Kohala and Honoka'a.

Enhanced Healthy Start - The program offers home visiting, counseling, and nursing consultation to families with children involved in the child welfare services system.  Needs are identified through an assessment tool, and the Nurturing Parenting Program curriculum is provided to caregivers; this curriculum includes activities for the caregiver to do with children to apply the lessons learned.  Regular developmental screening of infants and toddlers is part of the program, as is referral to special assistance as needed to address developmental delays.

Ke Anuenue Pili Kai Center (Rainbow from the Ocean) Infant and toddler care center at Kealakehe High School.  The children are cared for as they would be in a traditional center with music, art, free creative play, and group times taught by qualified teachers. A unique play yard has been created especially for them, a place to enjoy as they work on their large motor skills.  FSSWH Early Head Start staff have been implementing training activities with the moms and dads every week during their activity period. Staff show them new ways of interacting with their children.

Home Instruction for Parents of Preschool Youngsters (HIPPY) provides home visitation and socialization groups with emphasis on teaching and modeling how to be your child's first teacher through the use of the thirty-week HIPPY curriculum for 3, 4, and 5 year olds in the Kealakehe, Kahakai and Ka'u School districts.
